elsalvadorProject Summary

Chagas Disease is a zoonosis caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The geographical distribution of the human T.cruzi infection extends from Mexico to the south of Argentina.

The disease affects 16 - 18 million people and some 100 million, Of those infected an estimated 50,000 die each year i.e. about 25% of the population of Latin America is at risk of acquiring Chagas disease.

The risk of infection with Chagas disease is directly related to poverty: Chagas disease primarily affects low-income people living in poorly constructed homes in rural areas in Central America cause People sleep in houses made from mud and adobe, or thatch, these people are at greatest risk.
