Fighting against the machismo still present in their surroundings, 10 women from Jazmines A, a rural community in the North of Costa Rica, work together to bring food to their homes.
Organized in a women’s association, the 10 women were trained with the help of Reto Juvenil Internacional and other non-profit organizations to become self-sustainable.
After attending several workshops on topics such as self esteem, yard management system and organic production, the women were successful on the following projects:
These three projects gave the women one more source of income and helped them improve their and their family’s daily diet.
These women not only work on projects to help themselves and their families. They also work for their community.
They organized a trip to the beach and a horseback ride to not only raise money for their association but also entertain the Jazmines A people.
Also, because some Jazmines A people still use outhouses, the group of women is working to provide all community families with a toilet in their houses.
The women’s association is still eager to receive more training so that it can keep helping its members and their families and the Jazmines A people.
The group members said they need training in areas such as accounting, finance and small business (to keep track of the association’s business), English (to communicate with international volunteers who come through Reto Juvenil Internacional to help the association) and computer science (to keep track of the information on the association’s business).
Students interested in volunteering can give workshops to train the Association women in any of the topics mentioned above.

- Raising backyard chicken to provide the 10 association members with meat and eggs to eat and sell;
- Cultivating passion fruit in their backyard to eat and sell;
- Planting fruits and vegetables in a greenhouse using the least amount of agrochemicals possible. These high-quality products were not available in Jazmines A before the women started working on this project.
