Last July, a second group of volunteers from YCI and RJI arrived to Finca La Florida in Colomba, Guatemala to provide more development and training opportunities to this community. La Florida is composed by 40 families that after a hard struggle were able to obtain this land to work it as their own. Now, the community is striving to take forward the production of organic coffee and macadamia nuts. Furthermore, the community has a small hostel and an ecotourism project that is giving its first steps.
The volunteers worked to build the trails, to paint the hostel, to fertilize the coffee plants and to clean the recreational and sports areas, with a lot of effort and desire to help. The biggest achievement obtained was the consolidation of a youth association who, through meetings in the afternoons, were given a space to learn and express their ideas. The main objective was to promote leadership and active participation on the community projects.
Also, a Dental Health campaign was organized for children and parents; a birth control method workshop for adolescents and young adults, and finally basic first aid training was delivered to the community medical staff. Equally, this volunteer program achieved the creation of a business and marketing plan for the Eco touristic project.
