Mexican culture reflects the complexity of the country´s history through the blending of indigenous cultures and Spanish culture, imparted during Spain's 300-year colonization of the country. Mexico is the fifth largest country in America by total area and the thirteenth largest independent nation in the world. With an estimated population of over 113 million, it is the most populous Spanish-speaking country.
According to the OECD, worldwide Mexico is the country with the second highest degree of economic disparity between the extremely poor and extremely rich. The bottom ten percent in the income hierarchy disposes of 1.36% of the country's resources, whereas the upper ten percent dispose of almost 36%. OECD also notes that Mexico's budgeted expenses for poverty alleviation and social development is only about a third of the OECD average.
Most important contemporary development challenges in Mexico include low wages, underemployment, inequitable income distribution, lack of opportunities in the southern states and drug traffic.
Our work:
Reto Juvenil has been present in Mexico implementing volunteering programs focused mainly on children and education. Together with the RJI staff, volunteers have contributed with their time and skills to improve the social and economic welfare of the area.
