Panama 2009 - Silico Creek Community

Panama Project - Silico CReek Community (Urani), Ryerson University
Project February 16th until february 21st - 2009

In just 5 days, the group working building the base for the roof for the third cabin in the Ecotourism project at Silico Creek. English lesson for the community members, also cleaning campaign around the community.

We worked with the URARI Community located in Silico Creek. The Indian Ngöbe Bugle community had been working in an ecotourism Project, developed a balance way of life, maintaining the Original Culture and habitats of their ancestors, but looking for opportunities to improve the incomes without neglecting their natural resources and Culture.

URARI community its Located in Silico Creek, Bocas del Toro Province, northwestern corner of Panama, The Bocas del Toro site includes the area surrounding Bastimentos Island and, on the mainland, the National Protected Areas of San Cristobal, Pond Sack Wetlands, La Amistad International Park, and the Palo Seco Protected Forest.

The community is beautiful, it’s located within the forest, consists of approximately 40 indigenous Ngobe families with a total estimated population of 200. At the heart of the community is a small primary school, a little shops, they also have a little souvenir store where you can buy and learn how to create a Ngöbe bugle Indian Dress or Bags.

A Brief History of Ryerson University
