ACOCONE, People With Special Needs

ACOCONE is a group of parents that join together with the hopes of improving the lives of their sons, daughters’ or relatives who have been affected by disabilities. They have active group 52 people, 87% live in extreme poverty and the majority eat only one meal per day ACOCONE is developing independence and self-reliance thru its active program. A small school is also at the location, The program is offered to people with disabilities in poor condition, located in Coronado, San José.

The ages of participants are between 10 to 30 years old. People with disabilities live in a world designed primarily for the able-bodied. People with disabilities want to live life no differently than anyone else. They want to be able to do many things, and enjoy life, fully realizing that must be done within the boundaries of their limitations.

Accepting disability and redefining life within the limitations imposed by disease is the biggest hurdle for people with disabilities. While there are a myriad of assistive equipment and medication, the harsh reality is that it all comes at a price. ACOCONE members may be poor people, but we want together


About your volunteer works

Reto International volunteers are most welcome to help out in the center in San Antonio de Coronado only 13 minutes from San José down town, Volunteers will work directly with disabled people in games, physical therapy, acting classes, arts, hand crafts and tutoring, as well as pursuing activities may provide them with ways to make their own money.Also any skills or services that volunteers can share with the population will be greatly appreciated.

The ability to eliminate the emotional or physical pain of these special people thought field or special programs or any other activity with enthusiasm can help in the work of rehabilitation. Joint mobilizations, strength training and exercising daily plays a crucial role in the long process of healing and recovering for participants and offers good training for volunteers, This is our goal of physical therapy exercises. Stretching and strengthening activities are only a few types of physical therapy exercises.

Balance, joint control, and muscle training are other types of important physical therapy exercises to develop the group. For Reto Juvenil, one of the most rewarding experiences have been working with children and adults with special needs.

Accommodation

Home stay. You will be living with some of the local families that live in the Coronado community. All accommodations are clean, and families make and extra effort to make their guests feel comfortable.

Food

Typical Costa Rican dishes should be expected (rice, beans, vegetables, fruits.) 3 meals Per Day.

Hogarcito de Turrialba - Kids at Social Risk Shelter

Hogarcito de Niños de Azul de Turrialba is a community-based association supported by the Lion’s Club, that provides an alternate housing center for children suffering psychological and /or physical abuse.

If after the first period in the centre, the parents have not changed their abusive behavior, the children are moved to an orphanage in San José. Here, they will undergo an adoption process, where they will be placed with families that can provide them with the love and care they deserve.

Azul de Turrialba is a multi-ethnic community, as reflected by the indigenous population at the children’s shelter


About your volunteer works

Reto International volunteers are most welcome to help out in the center in “Hogarcito de niños” located in Azul de Turrialba, Cartago Province about 2 Hours by Public Bus from San José, The capital of Costa Rica.

Volunteers will work directly with disable people in games, physical therapy, acting classes, arts, hand crafts and tutoring, as well as pursuing activities that take advantage of specialized to help them. Also any skills services that can be shared with the population will be greatly appreciated.

Ability to the elimination of emotional pain of this kids thought field or special work or any other activity with enthusiasm can help a lot.

Los Jazmines - A Women Group

The Women’s group was initiated by a women’s association in the community of Los Jazmines. The group formed with the idea of being self- supporting.80% is single mothers and everyone has 2 hectares of land gives by the Costa Rica government. Jazmines is a small village of approximately thirty-three families in the northern lowland area of Costa Rica.

Located very close to the Nicaraguan border, it is among the poorest regions of Costa Rica and is a key area of focus for much of the international development work in the country. The village contains a school serving about 60 children, a small church, a community center built by RETO COSTA RICA volunteers in 2005,The community also has had an interdisciplinary group from Columbia University set up the program and also are receiving capacitation from World Vision and Reto Juvenil Conference Department, After an intensive work, Las Mujeres de Jazmines are ready to start a Productive Plan.


About your volunteer works

Training the women’s group in:

  • Develop a strategic plan for the group's
  • Self-esteem and management issues
  • Computer training
  • Project management
  • Basic concepts of micro-enterprise
  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Link the women up with other women's groups
  • How to create a Report.

You will live with a local family. All accommodations are clean and have running water. Families make an extra effort to make their guests feel comfortable and welcome in their home.
