Indigenous School with Solar Electricity

Cerro Azul Primary School is a school located within a remote indigenous Cabecar territory without electricity. In an effort to solve this problem Reto Juvenil Internacional with support from  Students Offering Support wrote a proposal on 2019 requesting support and funds to University of Toronto to install a solar power at the School.

Reto Juvenil Internacional and Students offering Support are happy to report that the solar energy project that was identified for implementation at the school has been completed. The project materialized with the help of professional support and generous funding in charge of John Shouts from University of Toronto, Canada. The project entailed purchase and installation of solar panel system and today I have the pleasure to report that the project was largely a success. The project set out with the main objective of installation of solar energy and set ofBatteries at Cero Azul Indigenous School.

The proposal was able to secure the funds thanks to John Shoust who create a fundraising strategy. A contractor was contacted to provide the needed quotation for the installation. When the fund came through, a group of 6 participants: Buse Guler, Calvin Rieder, Zoya Kosandar, David Coccimiglio, John P Shoust and John traveled from Canada to Cerro Azul, Costa Rica from Oct 29th to Nov 6. 2022 and inaugurated on january 2023.

The group also identified a second big need “Internet Access” to improve the Indigenous Education, though they have computers donated at the school, they were lag behind in the race of technological development for want of internet connection with the computers.

We all know Internet access is crucial to levelling up rural education and will help students from rural areas to succeed in their education, no matter where the school is. Students from cerro azul will benefit from being able to link up with existing online education programs and access to an ever-growing library of online tools designed to make lessons more fun and engaging, In partnership, Costa Rica Ministry of Education with the Department for Digital supports schools across rural areas providing a free monthly internet plan but schools must to provide the equipment.

The activities and benefits of this project to the students of Cerro Azul Primary School are an unique learning experience for students. Students can now prolong their reading, improve their quality of life and health because they also have a refrigerator to preserve different type of foods to improve their diet and internet access to learn update info. The completion of this project has brought much joy both to students, teachers and the administration staff of Cerro Azul school.

The students are absolutely ecstatic about this project implementation. And one of the students said on behalf of others that they are very excited and thankful for this project. “It gives us opportunity to extend our reading hours even after darkness setting in. We will make the most of this provision and work hard to pass well”. Happiness the entire school even teachers were happy that they can supervise students to improve the education accessing internet.

It’s a great opportunity to both teachers and students to steer towards academic excellence at Cerro Azul Primary School.

Thank you very much!
